March 1915 - RMA Howitzer Brigade deployed the first of ten 15 inch Howitzer to the Western Front and took part in the Battle of Neuve Chappelle. These guns were the heaviest mobile weapons of the war. The following month the RMA Anti-Aircraft Brigade arrived with sixteen 2-pdr Pom Poms, each mounted on armoured lorries.

In January 1945, 42 and 44 RM Commando along with 1 Army Commando, extended their campaign into the Arakan with an amphibious landing and advance upon Kangaw. The climax was the capture and defence of Hill 170 against a determined Japanese counter attack on 31 January.

2 August 1917 - Squadron Commander EH Dunning in a Sopwith Pup landed onboard HMS Furious. He repeated the feat the next day but was killed in a second attempt that day. This important first allowed the Admiralty to plan ships that could allow take off and landing on the same deck. This is seen in the first true aircraft carrier with flush deck - HMS Argus in September 1918.

28 January 1909 - Aerial navigation sub-committe of the CID Report recommended the construction of rigid airships for the Royal Navy. This photograph shows HMS Number 1, also dubbed the 'Mayfly'.

In November 1911, Commander Schwann made the first take-off by a float fitted seaplane. December 1911, Lt AM Longmore RN the first successful landing by a seaplane. January 1912, Lt CR Samson took off from a Platform built over the bows of the battleship HMS Africa. May 1912 Cdr Samson flies the first aircraft to be launched from a ship whilst underway.

The Battle of the Falklands was the first battle of the World War One to involve capital ships. The battle cruisers HMS Invincible and HMS Inflexible catch and sink a powerful German squadron.

The first Flower class Corvettes were launched in 1940. These small escorts designed to be built in small yards to merchant ship standards were built in large numbers in the UK and Canada. They were very important during the Battle of the Atlantic and for arctic convoys as anti-submarine escorts.
