On 7 May 1945 peace returned to Europe as Germany signed the terms of unconditional surrender. Later that year, on 2 September after the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese formally surrendered in Tokyo Bay onboard the United States Battleships USS Missouri.
