The results
With the exception of two aircraft all the Swordfish had landed by 02:50 on the 12 November. The “Men of Taranto” had expected far higher casualties but their tactics were well thought out and effective. Italy withdrew the remains of its fleet to Naples and the British fleet received much greater freedom in the Mediterranean. Taranto was perhaps the first occasion when other warships supported a carrier and its aircraft in action against the enemy, a situation that would be considered normal by 1945.
