The Royal Marines’ presence on the Southern Flank also enabled Britain and NATO to maintain a show of force in other trouble areas in the regions and preserve other British interests.

By mid 1970s 3 Commando Brigade’s Southern Flank role was discarded. This was mainly due to lack of shipping and a perception in the UK defence establishment that on the Northern Flank the amphibious force had a more credible task.
