Trident programme

Article Highlights

Opposition

The Trident system has received significant opposition during its development, reflecting more general opposition to the use of nuclear weapons. Several groups have taken action against Trident, such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. A peace camp, established in the early 1980s, is also located near Faslane naval base.

The Trident programme also created tensions between Scotland and the government at Westminster. A number of Scottish political parties, such as the Scottish National Party, oppose the use of Trident missiles at Faslane and have taken part in blockades of the base. The majority of Scottish MPs also voted against upgrading the Trident system.
