Submarines built for minelaying and use in the Far East
The growing threat of war with Nazi Germany in the 1930s led Great Britain to undertake a massive rearmament programme from 1936 onwards. New classes of boat were developed and these would go on to serve the Royal Navy throughout World War Two. Small S and U class boats covered home coastal waters and the Mediterranean, but the international scope of any impending conflict also necessitated the construction of long distance craft.
