Article Highlights

HMS Dolphin today

The various Government reviews of naval establishments led to a reappraisal of the role of HMS Dolphin in the early 1990s and they eventually decommissioned the base on the 30th September 1998. The Government relocated the Royal Navy Submarine School to HMS Raleigh situated in Cornwall.

Today, The Royal Navy Submarine Museum now occupies part of HMS Dolphin. In 1963 a group of officers formed a trust which led to the formation of the museum. Originally housed in two mess decks above St. Ambrose Church the site only opened to the public during weekends in the summer. It now provides people with a chance to walk on board a real submarine and learn about what life is like living under the sea.
