Stanley Hill was born on 12 August 1909 in London. He worked as a Hydraulic Press operator before joining the Royal Navy. He entered the Navy under the National Service Act in 1939. He served as Sick Berth Attendant on seven different ships and establishments, including Pembroke Naval Hospital. Hill ended his service on the 30 May 1946.

Hill was a recipient of the Pacific Star for his service during World War Two. He served part of his time in the Pacific region. He sailed from England to Australia in the transport Empress of Scotland, before going on to the Philippines and Hong Kong where he served on the hospital ship HMHS Gerusalemme, helping to evacuate British ex-prisoners of war.

Hill trained as a male nurse after leaving the Navy and worked in the National Health Service until his retirement in 1969.
