David Bain was a Leading Stoker in the Collingwood Battalion of the Royal Naval Division during World War One. The battalion disbanded after suffering massive losses at the Third Battle of Krithia on 4 June 1915 during the Gallipoli campaign.

Bain became a prisoner of war of the Germans the same year, interred at Doeberitz camp situated to the west of Berlin from 1915 to 1918. A period of repatriation in Holland followed his release at the end of the war.

Bain married Lily Rodgers, a childhood friend with whom he had stayed in touch throughout his time as a POW, after his return to Sheffield in 1919.
